How it all began
Some time ago I started getting sick. I was always tired having headaches and I had to take medication all the time. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with hypertension. It did not come as a surprise because I was overweight (with a height of about 1.73m I weighed 100kg) I was also dealing with some work stress and the situation was taking its toll on me. To manage the stress I was drinking a bit more than I was supposed to.
The doctor immediately put me on medication to reduce my blood pressure. He had a long talk with me about the effects of my unhealthy lifestyle and gave me two options. If I was to manage to reduce my blood pressure I either had to take blood pressure medication for the rest of my life or I could change my lifestyle and start living healthy with exercise and a good diet.
I thought hard and long about my options and decided I was not going to take medication for life, definitely not. I chose the second option. To lead a healthy lifestyle with exercise, a good diet, and maintain a healthy weight. From that day I have never looked back. I dumped the medication and I have not taken anything for blood pressure since then. Now my blood pressure is controlled. I exercise regularly, 3-4 times a week and I eat a healthy diet for fitness.
Regular exercise is a good way to keep some diseases at bay, especially high blood pressure. From my life experiences, I advise every person I come into contact with to exercise regularly, eat healthy, a balanced diet with lots of fiber, lots of fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water, and just to make it your lifestyle to practice this. Exercise can take many forms. It can be brisk walking, jogging, resistance training, cycling, etc. Whichever form of exercise you choose, aim to make it a lifetime habit.
Covid-19 has caused havoc the world over. A lot of countries have engaged in nationwide lockdowns and we are all encouraged to stay at home. Now staying at home all the time is a challenge in itself. We all need regular exercise and to stay fit.
