The health benefits of exercise are numerous if you engage on a regular basis. It is important to exercise on a regular basis and to make regular exercise a lifetime experience. Our bodies function better when you engage in physical activity from time to time
Regular exercise will improve your health and well-being in so many ways. The costs of inactivity show in the form of bad health and diseases. In this article we will focus on only 10 out of the many benefits.
1. Weight Loss and Control
Exercise is good for shedding excess pounds gained from overindulgence in a bad diet and unhealthy habits. Regular workouts will help you to lose weight and to keep the lost pounds off.
When you exercise your muscles need a lot of instant energy. Your body will start by burning calories from the food you ate to produce energy for the muscles.
When these calories are burnt out the body goes on to break down the stored fat deposits to produce energy.
That is how fat is burnt during exercise such that you start to lose weight. Exercise will turn your body into a fat burning machine for weight loss.
It is important to mention you must combine exercise with good nutrition to achieve your weight loss goals. It will be futile if your exercise then go and overindulge again in the bad diet.
Excess weight leads to:
- Failure to perform daily chores
- Low self esteem
- Heart disease
2. Muscular Strength and Growth
Human muscles are worked by pulling, pushing and lifting a weight. Muscles subjected to such forces and stress will become stronger to overcome the weight.
The cells in the muscles subjected to the stress of exercise will synthesize with proteins and enlarge to overcome the stress. That is why protein is important for strength training. Muscles grow bigger and become stronger as a result of the periodic bouts of stress followed by periods of rest.
Weak muscles cause:
3. Strong Bones
Exercise induces bone regeneration where mature bone is replaced with new bone formed.
Exercise induces the pulling of calcium from the body to build more bone tissue. This helps to increase bone mineral density and strengthen the skeletal structure.
A weak bone structure leads to:
4. Good Heart Strength
The heart is made up of muscular tissue. When you exercise the heart starts to pump faster in order to pump enough oxygen and nutrient rich blood to reach the muscles.
Since the heart is a muscle when it pumps faster it will be working harder and in the process it grows stronger. With regular exercise your heart gets stronger and is able to pump higher volumes of blood with each beat.
A weak heart causes:
- Shortness of breath
- Heart failure.
5. Lowers Blood Pressure
When you exercise your heart rate increases and blood flows faster in the vessels. The vessels have to dilate to accommodate the higher volume of blood. When you stop exercising the blood vessels constrict back to normal size.
This causes the vessels to get accustomed to dilating and constricting such that they become flexible to different flows and volumes of blood. Your blood pressure gets lower as blood flows easily in flexible vessels.
High Blood Pressure leads to:
- Heart attack
6. Lowers Bad (LDL) Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a waxy like substance found in all the cells in our bodies mainly in the blood. The bad (LDL) cholesterol, because of its waxiness tends to stick to the walls of blood vessels and clogs the flow of blood.
Exercise stimulates the movement of the bad (LDL) cholesterol in the blood stream. As the heart rate increases with exercise and blood flows faster, the cholesterol is pushed through the vessels to the liver which either converts it to bile for digestion or flashes it out of the body.
Flexible blood vessels from exercise also make it more difficult for cholesterol to stick to the walls and cause clogging.
When blood stops flowing in the vessels this causes:
- Heart attack.
- Organ failure
7. Controls Blood Sugar
Sugar is glucose. A gram of glucose contains four calories where a calorie is a unit of the energy that we get from the food that we eat. So when you exercise the body produces energy for the muscles and the energy is measured in calories.
This energy is produced by burning glucose, the sugar in the blood. That is how exercise reduces blood sugar as the sugar is burnt to produce energy for the muscles.
Excess blood sugar in the blood causes :
- Kidney disease
- Impaired vision
- Heart disease
- Nerve problems
8. Improves Brain Health and Memory
When you exercise your heart beats faster and blood flow increases to all parts of the body including the brain. The brain needs a lot of oxygen to function well. The improved flow of blood will deliver oxygen rich blood to the brain which then functions better.
Exercise also aids the release of hormones that stimulates the production of new brain cells and it stimulates the connections between the cells improving memory. Yes exercise makes you smarter and think better.
Poor brain function causes:
- Slow thinking
- Poor memory
- Lack of focus
9. Reduces Stress and Depression
Exercise is s good as using anti-depressant drugs. Exercise induces the release of endorphins, the feel good hormones that improves your mood. Endorphins are the body’s natural anti-depressants.
Exercise also reduces the release of cortisol the stress hormones. It helps you to deal with feelings of stress and anxiety
Stress and Depression can lead to:
- Panic attacks
- Personality disorders
- Heart Disease
- Heart attack
