Running is a good form of physical activity. There are numerous reasons why running is good for health and overall well-being. A beginner to exercise can start by running and it requires very little investment if you are going to run outdoors.
If you are not running outdoors then you can invest in a good quality treadmill for running in the comfort of your home. The treadmill can be a very good investment considering the risk of contracting Covid-19 when you go out to run. You can run at any time of the day that is convenient for you.
1. Weight Loss
Running burns body fat as the body requires an instant source of energy. As you start to run the physical strain on the muscles requires quite a lot of instant energy. The body starts by burning the calorie intake for that day to produce energy for the muscles.
When the calories are burnt out the body turns to stored body fat as a source of energy. The fat starts to burn to produce energy for the muscles. That is how the fat is depleted in the body. You lose weight and remain with lean muscle tissue.
2. Strengthens bones
Running helps to build strong bones and good bone mass. As you run the body muscles which are attached to the bones contract and expand rapidly. This causes the pulling of calcium from the bloodstream which is used to strengthen the bones and increase their density.
As muscles continue to pull and push on the bones as you run faster, more calcium is required to ensure the bones are stronger and do not break from the physical force. The result of this process repeated several times is stronger bones for your body.
3. Strengthens the muscles
There is a growth hormone that is produced by the pituitary gland in our bodies that causes muscles to grow in strength and mass. Running triggers a release of this growth hormone and muscles grow even for hours well after the run. In actual fact, muscles grow more during the resting period after the workout even when you are asleep.
The other factor causing muscle growth is your own body weight. You will be carrying your own body weight on your legs and core muscles as you run. It only follows that muscles contracting and expanding whilst carrying weight will grow.
In the end running strengthens your legs and core muscles. Even your shoulder muscles also work out as you move your arms back and forth in tandem with the run.
4. Improves cognitive function
Running improves your brain function significantly. As you run the heart pumps a lot of oxygen-rich blood into your brain. The brain needs this oxygen, lots of it for good function. All the small blood vessels in the brain will be flowing with oxygenated blood as you run.
Some new brain cells are formed as circulation is improved. It improves your level of thinking, you get more organized and can solve problems better. Runners are smart thinkers.
5. Improves blood flow
Running stimulates blood flow in the body. As you start to run the heart responds by beating faster and harder. Blood circulation in the body increases. Some blood clots that were starting to form in the vessels will be cleared by the increased circulation.
Blood clots are dangerous for our bodies as they prevent the flow of blood. Oxygen and nutrient-rich blood are able to reach all your body organs for good nourishment. As a result, all your body organs benefit from this improved blood flow.
6. Good heart health
Running causes the heart to work harder and beat faster. The heart is a super muscle which like all the other muscles grows and worked hard. With regular running, your heart will be much stronger and more efficient.
Your heart will be able to pump better clearing all the clogging in the vessels and taking out bad cholesterol.
7. Feel-good hormones
Running triggers the release of feel-good hormones called endorphins that start to flow over your body. You start to feel calm and relaxed after a run. Some call it ‘the runners high’.
It reduces depression and enables people to cope better with stressful situations. You get a general feeling of calmness and reduced anxiety after running.
8. Lowers bad cholesterol
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your bloodstream. It accumulates from a bad diet, eating saturated fats, and a lot of processed foods. If left to accumulate it solidifies in the blood vessels and prevents blood from flowing and this is deadly.
Running stimulates better blood flow in the vessels enabling the transportation of the bad cholesterol to the liver which cleans the cholesterol out the body.
9. Lower Blood Pressure
Running helps to lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. Blood pressure is the rate of flow of blood given the resistance to the blood flow in the arteries. Things like cholesterol and blood clots help to resist the smooth flow of blood in the vessels.
Blood pressure becomes high when the heart is pumping blood and there is a lot of resistance in the vessels. This is a bad condition that needs to be treated. Running will help to treat this by the cleansing effect of faster blood flow as you run.
The cholesterol and clots are transported to the liver which cleans them out of your system. When your arteries are clean and in good health, blood flows smoothly throughout your body without any resistance and your heart will not have to work extra hard to pump blood. Your blood pressure will be reduced.
10. Sleep better
Running helps to improve sleep quality and quantity. It helps to treat insomnia. After a good run, your body will be tired and needs rest. The feel-good hormones make you feel calm and relaxed enabling better sleep.
Your core temperature decreases after a run and this induces the need for a restful sleep. Good quality sleep rejuvenates your body for better function the next day.
Run for a healthier and longer life
Running adds years to your life and adds life to your years. Running improves your body fitness, strengthens your muscles, give you a good strong heart, improves your blood flow, cleans cholesterol out your system and lowers blood pressure.
Running enables delivery of rich oxygenated blood to all your organs including your brain and after running you will be tired and you sleep better. Running produces a healthy you. Running makes you live longer enjoying good health.
